Prior to any surgery, a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate the general health of the patient.

Breast Augmentation

Augmentation Mammaplasty

A thorough examination of the breasts is also made to determine the best surgical approach. The physician describes the type of anesthesia to be used, the procedure, what results might realistically be expected and the possible risks and complications.

Mammograms or x-rays may be taken as well as photographs. Preoperative instructions often include the elimination of certain drugs, which may contain aspirin, and/or certain herbs and vitamins, in order to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding. Birth control and other estrogen containing hormones may also be discontinued temporarily for the same reason.

The Procedure

Breast Augmentations are preformed in hospital, outpatient, under general anesthesia with the patient asleep. The technique most frequently used is an incision made in the lower portion of the breast near the chest wall. When the incision is made in the lower portion of the breast a pocket is created beneath the chest wall muscles and a breast implant containing saline solution is inserted in the pocket. Different sizes of implants may be used to correct breast asymmetry, and the surgeon can also adjust the amount of inflation of matching implants.

After the implant is securely in place, small sutures are used to close the incision. A breast augmentation usually takes about one hour depending upon the procedure and extent of the surgery.

Breast Augmentation Post Operative Instruction

It is important not to take pain medication if you are nauseated. Generally, ibuprofin (Advil) 600 mg, (3 tablets of Advil) will give very good pain relief. This can be repeated every 6 hours. Prescription pain medication may be added as needed. Use a phenergan suppository for nausea when it continues more than a few hours.

Move your arms over your head extended at least once an hour while awake. Lie gently on the breasts for 10-15 minutes the evening after surgery and several times a day to stretch the muscles.

There are no restrictions in activity after the surgery, but use common sense and do not do anything that causes unusual pain or trauma to the breast area. You may shower or bathe the morning after your surgery.

Expect your breasts to be very tight and full. They may seem very high with an un-natural shape. Generally, it will take a period of 1-2 months for the implants to settle and for the breast to achieve a normal, more natural appearance.

You may be more comfortable in a bra. We generally recommend a sport bra, which is stretchy and elastic. Avoid using an under wire for approximately four months following surgery. The breast shape will change greatly over the first 1-2 months and any bra you buy now will not likely fit later.

Bruising may develop following breast augmentation. This may appear in the lower breast or even down and over the abdominal area. Please contact me if you feel this is excessive, or if there is a large difference between the left and right breast.

Do not drive if you are taking narcotic pain medication. When you reach a point that narcotics are not necessary and you feel that you can move quickly enough to avoid an accident, then it should be safe to drive. If there is any question in your mind, postpone driving for a few days.

Breast Reduction

Reduction Mammaplasty

Very often, women with unusually large, sagging or uneven breasts are dissatisfied with their physical appearance. Many experience pain or discomfort from the sheer weight of their breasts and the pressure of brassiere straps on their shoulders. Premenstrual congestion often adds to the discomfort. Large breasts cam hamper a women’s physical activities and make it difficult to find properly fitting clothes, particularly brassieres. Today, because of advances in surgical techniques, thousands of women with these problems are being helped through a surgical procedure called reduction mammaplasty or breast reduction. This surgery is designed to improve the body contour, reduce pain and make the individual more comfortable when engaging in physical activities.

Before Surgery

A thorough examination of the breasts is made to determine the most effective surgical approach. Our Huntsville Breast Reduction surgeon, Dr. Bundrick, will describes the type of anesthesia to be used, the procedure, what results might realistically be expected and the possible risks and complications.

A breast reduction is preformed at the hospital, as an outpatient, under general anesthesia with the patient asleep. One of the techniques most frequently used is called a brassiere pattern skin reduction. This technique involves both vertical and horizontal incisions made around the nipple area after which excess fat; tissue and skin are removed from the sides of the breast. Following the excision, the nipple and areola (dark, pink area circling the nipple) and tissue below are relocated. Breast tissue is moved upward to create upper fullness and shape; then small sutures are used to close the incisions. The surgery usually takes two to three hours.

Following Surgery

Pain connected with the procedure is minimal to moderate and is controlled with oral medication. Instructions for the day of surgery include bed rest with limited activities. The physician determines when normal activities can be resumed; however, strenuous exercise and overhead lifting must be avoided for several weeks.

After Breast Reduction

Sutures are removed in about four days. Numbness around the treated area may occur, but this condition is usually temporary. Swelling and discoloration disappear in a few days and scars from incisions, although permanent, fade significantly with time.

Complications of infection and slow healing are rare; however, there are certain inherent risks connected with every surgical procedure, which should be thoroughly discussed with the physician. Patients can minimize complications by carefully following directions given by the physician. Some patients who experience poor healing may require additional treatment.

Will insurance pay for this Surgery?

Some insurance companies will pay part of all of the costs of this surgery if it is performed as a result of back or neurological problems related to large breasts. As insurance policies differ, our office will help you determine if your insurance will cover the procedure; pre-certification assures there will be no surprise costs. Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Physical beauty has always been associated with youthful breasts. Today, women who are disturbed by sagging or loose breasts as a result of pregnancy, weight loss or natural aging can be helped by a remarkable surgical technique called breast lift or mastopexy. This procedure is designed to elevate and reshape the breast. The size of the areola, the dark, pink skin, circling the nipple, can also be reduced through the procedure. Mastopexy is often performed in conjunction with surgery designed to enlarge the breasts.

Mammograms or x-rays may be taken prior to surgery. Preoperative instructions include the elimination of certain drugs, which contain aspirin in order to minimize excessive bleeding. Birth control and other estrogen containing hormones may also be discontinued temporarily for the same reason. Your ability to breast-feed after a mastopexy is usually not affected, but may vary with each individual.

A breast lift is usually preformed as an outpatient under general anesthesia. A modified procedure can be done on patients who have minimal sagging. This involves the removal of skin from the areola and surrounding areas. When breast augmentation is performed in conjunction with a mastopexy, an implant is placed in a pocket created under the chest muscle.

Complications of infection and blood clots are rare; however, there are certain inherent risks connected with every surgical procedure, which should be thoroughly considered. Patients can minimize complications by carefully following directions given by the physician.
